The primary one (or white source) relies on every raw published information such as press, internet, reports, databases, government reports etc. The secondary source (grey source) focuses and offers an analysis and a restatement of the primary sources through direct contacts (employees, customers, suppliers or any other contact linked with a company activity.

Competitive Intelligence only focuses on public information sources (white and grey sources). It means that all information collected are legally and legitimately obtained.
